One of the many things I admire about your twelfth book, Dearest Creature, is the way in which your poems dialogue with different manifestations of history--culture, visual art, dynamic events, etc. The poems partake in, assess, and riff off of history, but are not bogged down by it. How does "history" work in your poems? Ancient religions, the history of science, and archaeology are pet subjects of mine, so that provides an excuse to research antique beliefs, which I love doing. Also, I am a freak for old books: always happy to get my hands on piles of weird, dilapidated, dusty tomes and plunder them for language, ideas and images for poems. A mashup of vocabularies, images and dictions from different periods in history appeals to me because that's how I feel we exist in our own time, and in our own heads: living in the moment and also trailing or tangled in what's gone before. And I am interested, like many others, in ways personal history and larger historical events become inextricable.
